“This spring, just like every spring for as far back as any of us can remember, a brand new crop of graduates of high school find themselves facing a future filled with both hope and uncertainty.”
What kind of solid careers can graduates of high school find?
There really aren’t many. Graduates of high school find that they need to pursue more education of they are going to have a career which affords them any kind of desirable lifestyle.
But surely, there are some options, aren’t there?
Well, of course some graduates of high school find success without going to college, but unfortunately, it doesn’t happen too often. One really good option for those who don’t think they’re ready to take the next step and go to college yet is the military. The pay is not the world’s greatest, but entry level pay in the US military is $1,447 per month, which is certainly better than what most graduates of high school find themselves capable of earning.
The military pay is especially attractive when you consider that graduates of high school find when they become soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines they also receive a number of attractive fringe benefits. These include:
• Full medical benefits. This includes any dependents, if the young person has children or is married.
• Programs to help pay for college tuition.
• Generous life insurance packages. Given the potentially dangerous nature of the job, graduates of high school find this is invaluable.
• Job training. Many graduates of high school find the career training they receive in the military helps them later in the civilian world. This training can range from translation skills for a foreign language to auto mechanics.
• Housing. The $1,400 a month goes a lot farther when you don’t have to spend $600-$700 of it on an apartment. Most military posts offer housing, and those that don’t offer housing allowances.
What about college? Should I start right after graduation?
In most cases, the answer to this is an unequivocal yes, if you are qualified. Some students in high school find that they can’t get in to a desirable college, though, because of poor grades or economic concerns. If this is your situation, you might consider a year or two of community college, or even an online college. After demonstrating the ability to make the grade at a junior college or online university, graduates of high school find that they are much better able to find acceptance at the school of their choice.
When should I start applying to colleges?
If you are in your junior year or further, you should start applying to the colleges you are interested in right now. Students in high school find it much easier to obtain admission into college while they are in their junior year than at any other time. Of course, this assumes that your GPA is at least a 2.5 and that you have a respectable SAT or ACT score. If you don’t, consider applying to community colleges and spending a year or two there establishing yourself as a college student. Graduates of high school find universities much more accommodating after a year or two of proven track record at a junior college.
Your whole life is ahead of you. Seize the day! Whichever course you choose to take, go at it with all of the enthusiasm and ability that you have, and you will no doubt succeed in life.
